University’s career service rated top 20 in the UK

49993The University’s Careers and Employability Service has been rated 19th in the top 20 university career services in the UK. Student review website, StudentCrowd invited students from every university in the country to review their careers service by filling out an online form. 7,348 responses were recorded from students, with the University of Portsmouth appearing in the top 20.

Additionally, this year has been the most successful year for students undertaking a substantive volunteering opportunity with 1332 student volunteers in work based learning placements and 54,218 hours of voluntary work being undertaken in the third sector. The number of placements, roles advertised and services on offer have meant the Careers and Employability Service have contributed to an 18% year-on year growth in volunteering, with students planning ahead and applying to volunteer earlier.

External organisations are approaching the Volunteering Team on a regular basis as word about our student volunteers, and the support the University provides spreads amongst the third sector. There has also been an increase in demand for talks about the benefits of volunteering and more students are starting to volunteer in their first year.

Realising the value volunteering adds to our economy, graduate employers, potential employees and students, it is important that the University continues to promote and support volunteering opportunities for students. The team at the Careers and Employability Service look forward to continued growth both in the expansion of the portfolio of projects available and in the volunteering numbers for the 2017-2018 academic year, as well as strengthening the collaborative partnerships with all stakeholders and to forming new ones.
