4 ways to get noticed in a competitive employment market

Facebook PanelOn Thursday 28 September, the University’s Alumni Association went live with the third edition of their Facebook Live Series: 4 ways to get noticed in a competitive employment market. Streamed live from the University’s Career and Employability Service, and since watched by 3k viewers, panellists discussed four of the fundamental skills to complete a successful job search.

Gemma Frith, BSc (Hons) Television and Broadcasting graduate, presented the event and welcomed alumnus Kevin McLennan, Graduate Talent Manager and Senior Corporate Affairs Planning Manager at Centrica, and Alexandra Hemingway, Careers Advisor at the University of Portsmouth.

The panel discussed the importance of training and skills throughout your whole career, a variety of ways to network, how to use social media when making a career change, and enterprise.

Questions, submitted during the event from the live online audience, asked if you should still apply for a job even if you don’t meet the full criteria and how to get noticed when you’re one of thousands of applicants.

You can watch the video and listen to our panellists’ answers on the Alumni Association’s Facebook page. Alternatively, you can watch a highlights version and the full version on the Alumni blog.

In the final event of the series we will be hosting an intimate interview with the University’s new Chancellor; Karen Blackett OBE: From graduate to successful business woman.

Join the online event on Thursday 16 November 2017, 1pm – 1.30pm from the Alumni Association’s Facebook page.
