Looking for ‘Speak UP Step UP’ student champions

We’re looking for students interested in becoming ‘Speak UP Step UP’ champions to promote an active culture of dignity and respect at the University.

The role of the champions will be to run publicity and awareness campaigns and act as role models and advisers to inform students of what they can do as ‘active bystanders’ to prevent and tackle bullying and harassment. The campaigns will particularly focus on addressing sexual violence and hate crime.

If you already hold another student role (such as UPSU Officer or committee member, Advice Squad, Peer Mentor, Studentwatch, Course Rep or Student Ambassador) then you can incorporate this activity into the role.

What’s involved?

  • You will run publicity and awareness campaigns to promote the reporting of incidents of harassment, bullying, violence and intimidation.
  • You will help to cascade ‘active bystander’ awareness to other students, including a filming project to develop online training resources
  • The commitment to the role will work out to an average of one to two hours a week (Nov 2017–April 2018).

Who we’re looking for

  • Undergraduates or postgraduates who are studying here in 2017/18.
  • Attendance at an introductory session (if you have not already done so): 1.30pm–4.30pm Wednesday 11 October OR 6-9pm Tuesday 17 October
  • Successfully complete an interview and attend full training on Wednesday afternoons throughout November.
