The Cluster, an interdisciplinary research hub based at the University of Portsmouth‘s Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, brings together over 36 researchers from a wide range of disciplines across the University.

After 3 years in the making, the new book on urban density, ‘Growing Compact’ is finally available and in the book shops.

The book explores and unravels the phenomena, links and benefits between density, compactness and the sustainability of cities. It looks at the socio-climatic implications of density and takes a more holistic approach to sustainable urbanism by understanding the correlations between the social, economic and environmental dimensions of the city, and the challenges and opportunities with density.

“There is always this special moment when the new book arrives,” says Professor Lehmann. “After 3 years in the making, our book on urban density, ‘Growing Compact’ is now finally available. It’s a wonderful resource for all interested in the relationship between urban form, sustainability and density.”

The book is Volume IV in the Routledge book series on sustainable design, edited by series editor Steffen Lehmann, and can be ordered from Routledge here.

Alternatively, find the book on Amazon.

Growing Compact has been published by Routledge, 2017; with 23 chapters, 390 pages; ISBN: 978-1-138-68040-1
