Tourism students at the University of Portsmouth have put themselves ahead of the competition by studying for professional qualifications in disability access and customer service.

More than 40 BA (Hons) Hospitality Management students have been awarded professional industry awards by Tourism South-East.

One group completed Welcome All, which focuses on disability access within the hospitality and tourism industry; and another group completed Welcome Host Gold, which focuses on customer service. The second group also studied an additional City and Guild qualification in Principles of Customer Service in Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism.

The sessions were taught by tourism lecturers Adele Wise and Liz Sharples.

Liz ran a pilot scheme last year to assess the viability of running professional courses alongside university studies and it was agreed to embed professional qualifications to ensure that students have the opportunity to enhance their employment prospects.

Student Roxanne Policina said: “It has been very hard work but I have thoroughly enjoyed doing this course and I am sure it will help with looking for placements next year.”

Certificates were awarded to by Tourism South East chief executive Nigel Smith. He said: “It is a pleasure to work with the university again and support up and coming professionals. Often we work in industry with people already working therefore this is a great opportunity to train people right at the beginning of their careers.”

Course leader Jennifer Johnston, who was also awarded her Welcome All qualification, said: “These students have shown real determination and worked extremely hard. I am very proud of them and how they have embraced every opportunity presented to them.”

Liz will be showcasing her professional qualifications teaching approach at the Chartered Association of Business Schools’ Learning, Teaching and Student Experience in Bristol at the end of this month.
