Cheer Off 2017

UOP_CheerOff_ 116The University’s annual Cheer Off event took place at the Mountbatten Centre on Wednesday 29 March.

The Department of Sport and Recreation worked in partnership with Portsmouth Phoenix, the University’s student cheerleading club, to recruit and train 14 cheerleading lead coaches and recruit 15 volunteer assistant coaches. The coaches then worked under the University’s community outreach programme UP for Sport, delivering ten weeks of coaching in 13 local primary and secondary schools, working hard in a bid to win the Cheer Off Winner title.

The Cheer Off is in its eighth year bringing together 240 local school children and 30 Portsmouth Phoenix members to give us a great show with lots of impressive performances. The judges from Phoenix were looking for cheer spirit, teamwork and sportsmanship among other elements of cheerleading and dance within each performance.

With more schools than ever taking part in the Cheer Off this year, the standard of performances was extremely high. Each school won an award including Best Tumbles, Cleanest Performance and Best Stunts. The overall winner for primary was Corpus Christi School, coached by Tyrah Noblemunn-Sweeney, Rachael Pearson and Chakade Fagan-Conteh and the overall winner for secondary was Portsmouth High School, coached by Sophie Brace and Olivia Woods.

A big well done to everyone who took part and the winners. Thank you to everyone for making the Cheer Off 2017 bigger than ever.
