The Detection of Deception

Research Title: Secrets and Lies

Department: Psychology

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth are interested in the verbal differences between truth tellers and liars.

In this study you will be allocated to one of two possible missions. Depending on which task you are allocated to, you may be required to lie when later interviewed about your mission. The study will take place in a single session (approximately 45 minutes in total) broken into two phases. The first phase is comprised of the mission and the second phase is the interview.

If you have previously taken part in ‘Fading Lies’, unfortunately you will be unable to take part in ‘Secrets and Lies’.

Volunteers must be:

  • Age: 18+
  • Gender: Either
  • Staff/Student: Both

More Information:

All participants will be paid £10 for their participation.

If you are able to tell a convincing story to the interviewer (either telling the truth or lying), you will be entered into a draw to win one of three possible prizes; £150, £100 and £50! The study will take part in King Henry Building.

  • Dates: 16/02/17 to 29/05/17
  • Duration: 45 mins
  • Location: King Henry Building
