Creative students learn from the best

Design-industry professionals are on campus this week working with some of the university’s most creative students.

Over 30 students from different disciplines are attending the Design Academy, an interactive four day training course run by the Design Council, a charity which works to improve people’s lives through the use of design. Students from architecture, interior architecture, graphic design, illustration, fashion, digital media and entertainment technology work on various creative briefs to solve real-world design challenges. They end by pitching their ideas, concepts solutions to the Design Academy team who select a winning team.

The first two days of the course held this week at the University, with a third day in February. The fourth and final day is held at the Design Council in London, where the students rub shoulders with professional product designers and industry specialists.

The Design Academy was set up to help prepare students for the real world of working in the creative industries. Students must apply for a place on the course and previous participants have said it was a hugely valuable experience.

Daniel Bass, who graduated from the University’s Graphic Design course last year, attended the first Design Academy in 2015. Dan, who is now a junior graphic designer at the University’s Marketing Department, said:

“It’s a great learning experience as everyone’s design processes are different and it teaches you how to work as a team to create the best concept. I learned a lot in the four days and really appreciated the opportunity to mix with people from the industry.”

Simon Brookes, Interim Dean of the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, said: “This is the second year that this highly prestigious organisation has chosen to work with us and we are delighted to be in a position to offer it again to a selection of our creative students. It’s a valuable experience that develops their strategic capabilities through working together on real project briefs.”
