Major New Exhibition of Historical Landscape Photography

Professor Richard Healey has contributed his expertise in Civil War Era industrial photography to a major new exhibition of historical landscape photography at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, one of the most visited galleries in the USA.

The exhibition is entitled ‘East of the Mississippi: Nineteenth-Century American Landscape Photography’ and is curated by Diane Waggoner. This is the first time that there has been an exhibition which focuses exclusively on photographs made in the eastern half of the United States during the 19th century.

Professor Healey was first put in contact with Diane because of his detailed knowledge both of mining and railroad landscapes in the North-East USA, and of the extent of surviving photography of these landscapes in the 1860s and 1870s. Following on from this he was able to provide specialist input into the relevant section of the Museum catalog. Further collaboration on rare Civil War Era photography is now underway. The exhibition continues in Washington, before moving to the New Orleans Museum of Art for a season in October.

Stress and well-being in dental students

A collaborative study between the Dental Academy and Department of Psychology entitled ‘Does stress in a dental hygiene and dental therapy undergraduate programme contribute to a sense of well-being in the students?’ has created a wave of excitement among the dental profession.

The study, which will be published in the 7 July edition of the British Dental Journal, has been chosen to be highlighted in the ‘Research Insights’ section of the journal, along with an associated YouTube video abstract.

Student develops emergency response for BVI

Postgraduate student Kieron Chapman has helped the British Virgin Islands in developing a response for coping with a mass casualty event involving locals and tourists.

Kieron, who is studying Crisis and Disaster Management, was on a four-week internship programme with the Department of Disaster Management (DDM).

While in the Territory, Kieron assessed emergency plans and conducted interviews and questionnaires with key stakeholders including members of the public and tourists.
